Lichens are among the most unique, resilient organisms on Earth—and among the least understood. In this class, you'll explore the identification, natural history, and ecology of lichens of the Northeast, especially those in the NYC area. Learn about their exceptional symbiotic lifestyles, the crucial roles they play in our landscape, and how to distinguish common species. Each session includes a walk on NYBG grounds, where we'll meet our local lichens face-to-face and identify them in the field.

Instructor:	Wilton Rao Wilton Rao Wilton Rao Wilton Rao is an engineer and a walk leader at the New York Mycological Society. A citizen scientist and amateur naturalist, he specializes in the funga, flora, and lichen diversity of NYC. He has led mushroom walks at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Pioneer Works, and Museum of the Moving Image. He spends his time reading, foraging wild foods, gardening, and documenting the wildlife of Queens. His other interests include paleobiology, urban geography, cultural studies, and economic history.
