Soil is a dynamic, living organism and the very foundation of sustainable horticulture and agriculture.This course focuses on the texture, structure, density, and color of different soils and the dynamic relationship that exists among soil, water, and plants.Through lectures and labs using microscopes, learn irrigation and drainage techniques and explore how soil, organic matter, and microbiology relate to plant health and soil conservation.

George Lozefski

George Lozefski is the Laboratory Manager and Field & Education/Outreach Coordinator at the Urban Soils Institute & NYC Soil & Water Conservation District. As a dedicated and passionate scientist and educator, George has conducted environmental research at Columbia University's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory for over 10 years and has been teaching geoscience coursesfor over 10 years at Brooklyn College. George conducts soil science and soil testing workshops and provides training in soil quality test evaluations for academic and community settings. The institute's mission is to analyze urban soils for contaminants and provide general soil quality analysis and resources for optimizing soil health for urban agriculture. He also conducts research in green infrastructure including storm water capture, soil structure, infiltration, water and soil quality, and biogeochemistry. George received his B.S. Geology from Queens College, CUNY and a M.A. Environmental Science at Brooklyn College, CUNY.
