Using specimens from The Orchid Show, learn to paint the exquisite beauty of these delicate flowers. On day one, morphology expert Dick Rauh will guide you through the fine details and special adaptations of a wide variety of orchids. Then, master orchid artist Carol Woodin will show you techniques to achieve the waxy textures, subtle colors, and graceful forms of this flower family. Each student will produce a bookplate-sized painting in the style of a botanical monograph. Prerequisite: Botanical Drawing II

Instructor:	Carol Woodin Carol Woodin Carol Woodin Specializing in rare plants in watercolor on vellum, Carol Woodin's work has been exhibited around the world, recently at the Museo della Grafica, Pisa, Italy, Santorini Biennale of Arts, Greece, UBS Gallery, New York, and the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, UK. Some collections that include her work are the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Smithsonian NationalMuseum of Natural History, the Dr. Shirley Sherwood Collection, and the Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton Collection. Recipient of the 1998 ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award, a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal, and the 2016 Orchid Digest Medal of Honor, she served on the Board of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and is now its Director of Exhibitions. Learn more about Carol: carolwoodinart.com Dick Rauh Dick Rauh Dick Rauh Dick Rauh, Ph.D., received a Gold Medal for his illustrations of dry fruitsand other remnants in the January 2006 Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show in London, where he also earned a Best in Show. Dick started his career in botanical painting in retirement, after a career in Motion Picture Special Effects. In the 80s, he completed NYBG's certificate program in Botanical Art & Ilustration and started illustration work for a number of scientists. This led him to pursue a graduate program in Plant Sciences at the City University of New York, ending up with a doctorate in 2001. He received a Gold Medal for his illustrations of dry fruits and other remnants in the January 2006 Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show in London, where he also earned a Best in Show. Two of the painting have recently been included in the Hunt Collection at Carnegie-Mellon University. Other paintings have been included in the Hunt Collection at Carnegie-Mellon University, New York State Museum, and the Lindley Library in London. As a member of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium, Dick has been drawing a number of the specimen trees on their grounds as well as in their Bonsai collection. He has been on the board of ASBA for a number of years, and was the past president of the GNSI.
