25th Annual Winter Lecture Series: All Three Sections
This year's series brings together three illustrious garden practitioners—Bunny Williams, Jacqueline van der Kloet, and Cassie Banning—who have turned their passion for horticulture into diverse, thriving careers. They'll share their philosophies, stories, and lessons learned along the way—inspiring us to explore the variety of ways we can cultivate a deeper appreciation for the environment.
Life in the Garden: Bunny Williams
January 23, 11 am-12 pm, Ross Hall
Design legend Bunny Williams has made her name creating interiors with livable elegance, and nowhere is this more apparent than her own beloved country house in Connecticut in which she and her family have resided for over 35 years. From sunken and parterre landscaping to dedicated woodland and vegetable gardening areas, Williams has brought her impeccable eye to a series of gardens that extend across her verdant and ever evolving 22-acre property.
Join Williams as she traces the various iterations of her garden and how they change through the seasons. Through awe-inspiring photos and insights, take a personal look into Williams' newest book, Life in the Gardenwhich is brimming with her passion and infectious enthusiasm for planting, entertaining, and living among nature year-round.
The Art of Planting Bulbs: Jacqueline van der Kloet
February 13, 11 am-12 pm, Ross Hall
Renowned naturalistic garden designer, Jacqueline van der Kloet, has mastered a casual, magical technique where bulbs emerge playfully among other plants, as if dancing freely among the perennials and grasses, creating a painterly scene. Van der Kloet has been commissioned to assist in the planting design of some of the most prestigious public gardens in the world—from Holland's famous Keukenhof and the palace Huis ten Bosch in Nagasaki, Japan to New York's Battery Park and the New York Botanical Garden's Seasonal Walk (the latter in which she collaborated with fellow Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf).
Get a peek inside Van der Kloet's own garden, 'De Theetuin' in Weesp (The Netherlands), which serves as a testing ground for her planting experiments and a place that feeds her lifelong addiction to spring flowering bulbs. She'll also share visually-rich examples of her planting combination projects—including a castle garden in Germany, Het Park in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, a small park in Yokohama, Japan, and more.
Three Gardens on the Coast of Maine: Cassie Banning
March 27, 11 am-12 pm, Ross Hall
The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve located in Seal Harbor, Maine is a place of serenity spanning across 1,400 acres of breathtaking natural lands and historic gardens adjacent to Acadia National Park.
Cassie Banning, Director of Farm & Gardens at the Preserve, oversees the horticultural standards across the Preserve's three gardens—Asticou Azalea Garden, Thuya Garden, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden—each of which is a unique work of art that reinforces a strong sense of place and contributes to the wonder of coastal Maine.
Banning will share a brief history of these three gardens and take us on a behind-the-scenes tour into the craft of the gardens as well as horticulture maintenance practices used to preserve their historic nature.
We offer Continuing Education credits (CEUS) for LA CES and APLD for successful completion of this lecture series.
