NYU is recognized as having one of the longest-running therapeutic horticulture programs in the country. This visit offers an insider's look at the broad array of programs that the team facilitates both in the hospitals and in the community. Visit the garden room and terrace garden and observe patient sessions in two different departments. Witness how interactions with plants aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of diverse groups of patients served at this premier academic medical center.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Therapeutic Horticulture

Note: This site visit takes place on the grounds of a working hospital. Students attending this course must adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by NYU Langone. All students must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination upon arrival to the site visit.

Instructor:	NYU Langone Medical Center Horticultural Therapy Services NYU Langone Medical Center Horticultural Therapy Services NYU Langone Medical Center Horticultural Therapy Services In the mid-1970s, one of the nation's first horticultural therapy programs began at NYU Langone's Rusk Rehabilitation. Adults work with trained horticultural therapists on activities that can help rehabilitate physical, cognitive, social, and emotional functioning. By working with plants, participants can gain a sense of personal accomplishment, productivity, self-reliance, and independence. NYBG Site Visits are led by Matthew Wichrowski and Gwenn Fried. Matthew Wichrowski Matthew Wichrowski Matthew Wichrowski Matthew Wichrowski, MSW, HTR, has been practicing horticultural therapy at NYU-Langone Medical Center for 20 years, where he is SeniorHorticultural Therapist, and a clinical assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine at the NYU School of Medicine He lectures nationally and internationally and publishes regularly in a variety of media on the effects of nature on human health and well-being, the focus of his research interests.Recently, he co-authored the book, The Glass Garden: A Therapeutic Oasis in New York City, which won the 2015 AHTA Publication Award. Gwenn Fried Gwenn Fried Gwenn Fried Gwenn Fried is a horticultural therapist at the Glass Garden at NYU Medical Center and Project FIND Senior Center in New York City. She consults and lectures internationally on healing gardens and horticultural therapy.
