Therapeutic Horticulture: Spring Elective Package


NYBG's Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate Program enables you to create experiences that utilize plants, gardening, and nature to empower individuals and groups whose lives have been affected by illnesses, injuries, disabilities, and life circumstances to achieve improvements in their cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

This spring, complete the required elective course hours for the Certificate in three weeks' time! These three elective courses—Therapeutic Horticulture: Focus on Dementia, Developing Cultural Humility for Therapeutic Programs, and Therapeutic Horticulture: Focus on Spirituality—are planned in close sequence allowing you to be one step closer to completing your Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate. You have the option to register for this package at a savings or sign up for the classes individually.

Therapeutic Horticulture: Focus on Dementia
ONLINE: Monday, 3/31, 6-8 pm; IN-PERSON: Saturday, 4/5, 10 am-2:30 pm


Create meaningful connections for people living with Alzheimer's and/or dementia and their care partners, while providing environments and opportunities to support their natural abilities and initiative. Learn methods and manners to ease anxiety, de-stigmatize the diagnosis, and ultimately create moments of joy that humanize and spread compassionate understanding through the biophilic power of plants and nature.

Developing Cultural Humility for Therapeutic Programs
ONLINE: Tuesday, 4/29, 6-8 pm; IN-PERSON: Saturday, 5/3, 10 am-2:30 pm


Therapeutic horticulture recognizes and honors the culture and identity of our participants and communities. Develop your ability to be appropriately responsive to groups that share a common background such ethnicity, religion, race, language, gender identity, disability, neurodivergence, and more. The biodiversity of the natural world provides for rich exploration and meaningful connections. Create models within your programming that celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, enhance equity and center on accessibility. Note: This course requires pre-work, which will be sent to you by the instructor upon registration.

Therapeutic Horticulture: Focus on Spirituality
ONLINE: Wednesday, 5/7, 6-8pm; ONSITE: Saturday, 5/10, 10 am-2:30 pm


Nature has spiritual benefits that are often overlooked in therapeutic horticulture programming. In this course, you'll examine how the historical, cultural, and metaphorical significance of plants can inspire deep and meaningful connections for participants in all types of life circumstances. Explore firsthand how nature can add a new dimension to your practice from a spiritual perspective.
