Advanced Field Sketching

Take your naturalist game up another level by moving beyond sketchbook drawings to create an accordion book-or small series of artworks-inspired by your favorite observations of NYBG. Working with shadows and light, you'll explore color in a variety of media as you practice how to accurately capture unique detailing of your subjects. Previous drawing experience is not required.

Lorna Leighton

Lorna Leighton is a freelance illustrator/painter and graphic designer based in Yonkers. She has an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and has created illustrations for music, ballet, phone apps and toy companies.

For Lorna, the Covid pandemic was a really productive time creatively. As freelance work dried up, she focused on drawing and painting. She found a community of artists online by joining workshops and artist groups on Zoom. Lorna began sketching around her neighborhood. The process of 'sketchbooking' allowed her to explore ideas, techniques, colors and themes which she then transfers to her larger paintings.
