The Traveler: George Forster's Quest for Shared Humanity
Step into the life and times of George Forster, a remarkable young naturalist, writer, and revolutionary who journeyed to the far reaches of the known world—and whose radical ideas about humanity, equality, and freedom challenged the dominant worldviews of 18th-century Europe.
At the age of seventeen, Forster joined James Cook's second voyage in 1772, an exploration of extremes from the icy seas of Antarctica to the humid heat of tropical South Pacific islands. Observing indigenous people and diverse cultures, he returned with a deep belief in the equality of all races and by his early twenties, was celebrated across Europe, using his fame to advocate for freedom and human rights and against empire, racism, and slavery.
Join award-winning author Andrea Wulf, as she presents her newest book, The Traveler, which documents Forster's quest to find what connects us rather than what sets us apart.
