NYBG's 28th Annual Landscape Design Portfolios Lecture Series welcomes three renowned professionals who will explore how landscape architecture can honor the past, respond to the present, and cultivate a more resilient future through a deep understanding of place. Across projects ranging from memorials and historic restorations to public gardens and urban forests—Maura Rockcastle, ASLA, PLA, Douglas Hoerr, FASLA and Eric Kramer, FASLA—will share stories of thoughtful design that's shaped by a deep engagement with cultural narratives, ecological systems, and the unique character of each site.

Maura Rockcastle: Contours of Grief

Maura Rockcastle, ASLA, PLA is the co-founder, and principal of TEN x TEN—a transdisciplinary landscape architecture and urban design practice based in Minneapolis, MN that is grounded by a shared curiosity and passion for experimentation, storytelling, and agency.

Across memorials, gardens, and cultural sites of significance, TEN x TEN explores how design can provide spaces to heal and foster resilience, while acknowledging difficult histories. In her presentation, Rockcastle will share a series of project stories shaped by friction, memory, and grief such as the Constellation Garden Remembrance Memorial, a healing space at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the newly restored landscape at the Historic Fort Snelling at Bdote featuring prairies, paths, gathering spaces, overlooks, and messaging that celebrates the site's layered history.

Douglas Hoerr: Reading the Landscape

Douglas Hoerr, FASLA, approaches landscape architecture as an act of exceptional craftsmanship, one that begins not with a signature style, but with a careful reading of place. As the founding partner and president of Hoerr Schaudt, he has shaped some of the country's most celebrated residential gardens, civic landscapes, and cultural institutions for more than four decades through a design philosophy rooted in horticultural expertise, contextual thinking, and a profound respect for the unique opportunities each site presents.

Hoerr will demonstrate how extraordinary design often emerges from the most unexpected canvases. Drawing from projects including the multi-award-winning New England Farm, a painterly vision of 1700s Arcadia on Narragansett Bay; a former parking lot transformed into an ICAA Acanthus Award-winning garden in Columbus; the restoration of a long-lost Russell Page garden in St. Louis; the reimagined median of Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile that inspired nationwide urban greening; and the revitalization of Graceland Cemetery into an everyday cultural destination, Hoerr will reveal how careful observation, horticultural expertise, and cultural context result in transcending landscapes that last the test of time.

Eric Kramer: Tree, Grove, Forest

To plant a tree, to design a garden grove, to nurture an urban forest—these are inherently optimistic acts. Today, landscape architects are working across these scales, designing the spaces of our future and making choices about how we remain in productive dialogue with our past. As partner and principal of Reed Hilderbrand, Eric Kramer, FASLA, is committed to upholding this dialogue through innovative planting detail, the engagement of place and cultural narrative, and the activism of politics and government policy.

Through the lens of a small urban plaza in Boston, the effusive public gardens of Longwood Reimagined, and the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts', expansive Urban Forest, Kramer will explore how his design work responds to the complexity of the moment in which we are living.

With a background in printmaking and sculpture, Maura balances a rigorous approach to leadership and design innovation with a conceptual sensibility rooted in process. Maura's professional experience is focused on cultural, institutional, and complex public realm projects. Her work has received national awards for design excellence, preservation, and innovation. In 2015 she co-founded TEN x TEN to build a practice committed to horizontal co-authorship, radical transparency, and curiosity. Douglas Hoerr Douglas Hoerr Douglas Hoerr Douglas Hoerr is the co-founder of the national landscape architecture firm Hoerr Schaudt. Founded in 2008 and with offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Kansas City, MO, and Richmond, VA, the firm is known for its horticentric design approach to residential, commercial, and civic projects. Hoerr Schaudt has shaped the landscape architecture profession at large. Doug's groundbreaking design along Chicago's Michigan Avenue became a defining example of how horticulture can bring wonder to the urban experience, and the firm continues to make an impact on the urban experience with the recent completion of a new mixed-use space in Arlington, a destination playscape in Wichita, and the master plan for the expansion of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. In 2020, Doug planned the firm's next chapter by appointing four new partners to the leadership team, and in 2027, the firm will publish its second book. In the past five years alone, Doug and the team have earned more than two dozen major honors, including the 2026 ICAA Arthur Ross Awards, the Garden Club of America's 2026 Elvira Broome Doolan Medal for original and transformational urban landscape design, several ASLA awards, the 2026 and 2023 Palladio Awards, ICAA Bulfinch Awards, Interior Design's Best of Year, and LUXE RED Awards, among others. Eric Kramer Eric Kramer Eric Kramer Eric Kramer is a Partner and Principal of Reed Hilderbrand where he has guided design teams, clients, and communities in the renewal and enrichment of campuses, cities, and places of cultural and ecological significance. Eric joined the practice in 2000, committed to communicating design knowledge with clarity and care, knowledge built from rigorous scientific field research and the engagement of people and communities. His works include the Alamo Plaza Interpretive Master Plan, Longwood Reimagined, a comprehensive plan for the Morton Arboretum, and the expansion of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He edited Visible|Invisible, the firm's award-winning monograph. Eric has a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he received the Charles Eliot Fellowship, and graduated from Amherst College, where he was honored as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow. Eric has served as an adjunct professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design. He is widely published in academic research journals and the popular press and has spoken in venues across the country. Eric currently serves on the board of The Cultural Landscape Foundation.
