Tree Physiology

Explore how trees function, grow, and interact with their environment. In this class, you'll review essential processes such as photosynthesis, water transport, nutrient uptake, and respiration, and how these processes occur in trees as compared to other plants. Topics also include tree structure, the role of hormones in development, and how trees respond to various stresses—such as drought, temperature extremes, and wounds. You'll receive a fundamental understanding of tree biology, which can be applied to fields like forestry, arboriculture, and landscape architecture.

Prerequisite: Plant Structure (for Botany certificate students) or Basic Plant ID (for Urban Naturalist certificate students).

Instructor:	Melissa Finley Melissa Finley Melissa Finley Thain Curator of Woody Plants Melissa Finley is the Thain Curator of Woody Plants at the New York Botanical Garden. She holds a Masters of Plant Pathology from the Pennsylvania State University, where she researched the ability of Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight, to parasitize apple fruit tissues. She also holds a Bachelor's of Sustainable crop and landscaping systems with an emphasis in environmental horticulture from the University of Idaho. She is an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist and a qualified tree risk assessor. Her previous roles include: forester for the city of New York Department of Parks and Recreation, commercial arborist, and many various gardener and laboratory technician positions.
