History of Women in Botanical Art

Discover the remarkable women artists of the 17th and 18th centuries who transformed botanical art by blending traditional artistic training with the emerging scientific ideas of the Enlightenment Era—a period characterized by rapid and monumental societal changes that were fueled by the exploration and colonization of the continents of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Through a close study of their work—including a visit to the LuEsther T. Mertz Library—you'll explore their innovative styles, global experiences, and lasting influence on botanical illustration. Optional hands-on activities will be provided, inviting you to sketch or stitch botanical specimens using the historical techniques and materials of this period.
Schedule: Every week on Tuesday, starting on 03/02/27 and ending on 04/06/27. Class meets from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM EST on all days but 3/30, when it will meet from 10:30 AM-1:30 PM.
