Plant Microbiome Study

Explore the tiny living things that live on and inside plants. With a strong focus on bacteria, you'll learn how these microbes form communities, help plants grow and stay healthy, and how scientists study them.

Through lecture, discussion, and hands-on lab experience, you'll survey different surfaces that microbes live on plants—such as the roots (rhizosphere), leaves (phyllosphere), as well as inside plant tissues (endosphere) and examine the many environmental factors that influence the composition of microbial communities.

By the end of this course, you'll understand how these microscopic partners play a huge role in plant biodiversity.

Prerequisite: Plant Structure (for Botany certificate students) or Basic Plant ID (for Urban Naturalist certificate students).

While not required, we highly recommend taking Intro to Plant-Microbe Interactions prior to this class.
