Led by NYBG experts, this course—fit for novices and practicing composters alike—will guide you through the fundamental principles of composting. From the science of decomposition to the environmental benefits of putting your waste to good use, you'll discover the best composting system and tools for your lifestyle.

  • Understand the fundamental principles of composting including the five key factors to compost successfully
  • Compare different composting methods, tools, systems (vermicomposting, anyone?)
  • Explore best practices to maintain and troubleshoot common problem areas
  • Identify the best composting system for your lifestyle and environment

How It Works
Learn at your own pace in an online format. This course includes pre-recorded videos featuring NYBG's plant professionals who will guide you through the material. Videos will include quizzes and reflection points, designed to deepen your understanding of the course content. You'll have access to all videos, quizzes, and discussion forums for six months after the course start date, allowing you to complete the course at any time within that period.

This course can be applied as four (4) elective credit hours toward NYBG's Gardening Certificate Program.
