The Bronx River, New York City's only freshwater river, flows through the center of NYBG and is buffered by the Thain Family Forest. Learn the fundamental elements of our local riverine ecosystem teeming with life in the first session of this class which meets online. In the second session, you'll meet at NYBG to put your learning into hands-on practice. You'll prepare leaf packs using collected materials and observe how these packs are placed in the river to monitor macroinvertebrate activity. Then, you'll reconvene in the third session of class to examine the results—identifying what aquatic insects have gathered in your leaf packs and discuss what this tells us about the stream's health.
