Gentians in Watercolor

Learn how to mix beautiful shades of gentian blue—a vivid, deep purplish-blue color, to create a stunning depiction of a gentian species of your choosing. Using a visual example of Gentiana autumnalis as a guide, you'll learn how to capture this flower's deep, luminous hues and upright, trumpet-like petals as you build color using watercolor techniques. Colored pencils or masking fluid will be optional for defining details in this delicate species. Prerequisite: Botanical Watercolor I

Instructor:	Elizabeth DeCicco Elizabeth DeCicco Elizabeth DeCicco Elizabeth DeCicco began illustrating native plants, lichens, and fungi while taking a field botany class with the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. She visited research plots regularly to document the fruiting and flowering times of vascular plants in the NJ Pine Barrens. Studying plant communities helped her discover new populations of rare species and understand the importance of conservation. Watching orchids and other ephemeral species emerging from the peat, only to fade away as soon as they appeared, inspired her to enroll in the Botanical Art and Illustration program at NYBG. Elizabeth completed her certificate project, "Foliose and Fruticose Lichens in Graphite," while pursuing a Professional Science Master's (PSM) in Environmental Science. She received a fellowship to study fungal and mycorrhizal DNA present in older-growth Atlantic White Cedar swamps. Elizabeth now works as an analyst for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and enjoys painting in her spare time. She is a member of ASBA, the Tri-State-Botanical Artists, and the New Jersey Mycological Association. As a new instructor at NYBG, Elizabeth hopes to inspire others to connect with our native plant communities.
