Summer Skills Clinic: Pen and Ink

Led by talented artists and instructors, this day of the clinic will focus on pen and ink technique. Two instructors will guide you through specific areas of growth. You'll work on an assigned project for the morning and noon sessions and may bring in finished pieces or works in progress for professional critique in the afternoon.

This in-person session will boost proficiency and confidence as you strive to hone your technique in this lifelong learning discipline.

Morning: Strong and accurate drawing is key to success in botanical illustration. Gain a better understanding of scientific measuring, foreshortening, contour and cross contour lines and line quality.

Midday: Continue strengthening your drawing skills and apply them to the techniques of pen and ink rendering. Review the use of line and stipple to create tone in black and white.

Afternoon: Students are invited to bring in works in progress and completed pieces for guided instructor assistance and critique of graphite and pen and ink pieces.

Instructor:	Ken Fasano Ken Fasano Ken Fasano Ken Fasano earned his Botanical Illustration certification from the New York Botanical Garden where he graduated with honors. He is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Tri-State Botanical Artists, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and the American Conifer Society. Ken has published illustrations in Larone's "Medically Important Fungi". Ken has immersed himself in researching, photographing and illustrating conifers. He is currently taking classes in botany at NYBG. His preferred mediums are ink and graphite. Robin Jess Robin Jess Robin Jess Robin Jess is the former Executive Director of ASBA. She is fluent in graphite, watercolor, pen and ink, and etching and is the Coordinator of NYBG's Botanical Art & Illustration Program. Robin has been a freelance botanical illustrator and artist since 1976. She earned an M.A. from Pratt Institute. She has received two grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, including the Distinguished Artist's Fellowship in 1990. With funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and through the Pinelands Preservation Alliance, Robin created a series of 40 watercolors of New Jersey's Pinelands flora, which toured the state's major museums and arts venues.
