Botanical Art Summer Skills Clinic: All Four Days

Nothing quite compares to real time attention and feedback while working to perfect your botanical art and illustration skills. This summer, join us at NYBG for a brand-new, four-day clinic structured to aid students who have either completed their NYBG Certificate or are in the process of doing so.

Led by talented artists and instructors, each day of the clinic will focus on a particular medium that is taught within the certificate program. Two instructors will guide you through specific areas of growth. You'll work on an assigned project for the morning and noon sessions and may bring in finished pieces or works in progress for professional critique in the afternoon.

These in-person sessions will boost proficiency and confidence as you strive to hone your technique in this lifelong learning discipline.

You have the opportunity to sign up for individual days or all four as a package, as long as you meet the prerequisites listed in each day's description below.

Day One: Botanical Drawing
Morning: Students will split into two tour groups and rotate between the Steere Herbarium and the Mertz Library where you'll be introduced to these wonderful departments and the comprehensive resources available at NYBG.

Midday: Strong and accurate drawing is key to your success in botanical illustration. Gain a better understanding of scientific measuring, foreshortening, contour and cross contour lines and line quality.

Afternoon: Improvement with scientific lighting, toning, value and light on form are all important skills for setting up a successful full color rendering. Students are invited to share works in progress and/or completed pieces for instructor assistance and critique in graphite.
Prerequisite: Botanical Drawing II

Day Two: Pen and Ink
Morning: Strong and accurate drawing is key to success in botanical illustration. Gain a better understanding of scientific measuring, foreshortening, contour and cross contour lines and line quality.

Midday: Continue strengthening your drawing skills and apply them to the techniques of pen and ink rendering. Review the use of line and stipple to create tone in black and white.

Afternoon: Students are invited to bring in works in progress and completed pieces for guided instructor assistance and critique of graphite and pen and ink pieces.

Prerequisite: Pen and Ink

Day Three: Colored Pencil
Morning: Explore the use of thumbnails and value studies as a tool for successful color renderings.

Midday: Work on an assortment of colored pencil techniques including toning and blending and explore various color matching methods.

Afternoon: Students are invited to bring in works in progress and completed pieces for guided instructor assistance and critique with the colored pencil technique.

Prerequisite: Colored Pencil

Day Four: Botanical Watercolor
Morning: Flat washes, graded washes and dry brush are the foundation of successful watercolor rendering. Using neutral tint, you'll work with instructors to overcome problematic techniques without the use and complication of color.

Midday: Continue to perfect your technique as you introduce color matching and layering. You'll practice good habits for mixing and maintaining color matches.

Afternoon: Students are invited to bring in works in progress and completed pieces for instructor assistance and critique of watercolor pieces.

Instructor:	Gaye Grossman Gaye Grossman Gaye Grossman Gaye Grossman began her art career custom painting furniture and murals. This grew into a decorative paint finishing company that she ran for 25 years serving private homes and businesses throughout New York and Connecticut. In addition to her studies at Grand Central Atelier in New York City, she earned a certificate with honors in botanical illustration at the New York Botanical Garden. She has exhibited her work in the ASBA Annual International shows in New York and California, the Society of Botanical Artists Plantae '21 Exhibition, the Carter Burden Gallery in New York City and the Connecticut Cancer Foundation in Old Saybrook, CT. Gaye is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and is a Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists in Great Britain. She is a co-coordinator of the Tri-State Botanical Artists of New York Botanical Garden. Linda M. Nemergut Linda M. Nemergut Linda M. Nemergut Linda M. Nemergut, MFA, earned a Certificate in Botanical Art andIllustration from the Botanical Garden. She teaches art (Pre-K-8) at Immanuel Lutheran School in Danbury, Conn. See more at www.lindanemergut.com Ken Fasano Ken Fasano Ken Fasano Ken Fasano earned his Botanical Illustration certification from the New York Botanical Garden where he graduated with honors. He is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Tri-State Botanical Artists, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and the American Conifer Society. Ken has published illustrations in Larone's "Medically Important Fungi". Ken has immersed himself in researching, photographing and illustrating conifers. He is currently taking classes in botany at NYBG. His preferred mediums are ink and graphite. Robin Jess Robin Jess Robin Jess Robin Jess is the former Executive Director of ASBA. She is fluent in graphite, watercolor, pen and ink, and etching and is the Coordinator of NYBG's Botanical Art & Illustration Program. Robin has been a freelance botanical illustrator and artist since 1976. She earned an M.A. from Pratt Institute. She has received two grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, including the Distinguished Artist's Fellowship in 1990. With funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and through the Pinelands Preservation Alliance, Robin created a series of 40 watercolors of New Jersey's Pinelands flora, which toured the state's major museums and arts venues. Jeanne Reiner Jeanne Reiner Jeanne Reiner Jeanne Reiner has exhibited at Wave Hill, the New York Horticultural Society and the New York Botanical Garden through ASBA; Filoli, Woodside, CA; Newport, RI with the New England Society of Botanical Artists; the Flinn Gallery in Greenwich, CT; and shows, galleries and stores in NY, NJ, CT, FL and CA. Jeanne received her BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City and completed postgraduate work at Yale's Brissago Program in Switzerland and at Michigan State University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She received her botanical artist certification from the New York Botanical Garden. Ms. Reiner launched her studio in Manhattan and for 13 years provided design services to Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld and the New York City Ballet. Jeanne is the co-founder of the Tri-State Botanical Artists at NYBG and is a board member of the ASBA. In 2021, she also became a fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists in the UK. Kathryn Lyness Kathryn Lyness Kathryn Lyness Katy is a passionate home gardener whose interests brought her toNYBG's Botanical Illustration Program. She has been represented in theASBA Annual International Exhibition and is active in the Tri-State Botanical Artist Group. She also has an MA in Art Education from Columbia University, Teacher's College. Susan Sapanara Susan Sapanara Susan Sapanara While studying fine art at the School of Visual Arts, Susan Sapanara happened to take a textile design class that influenced her career for manyyears. She has designed for such names as Croscill, Laura Ashley, Echo, and Waterford, and her designs have been sold in Macy's; Bloomingdales; and Bed, Bath, and Beyond, to name a few. Her love of painting naturalsubjects lead her to attend NYBG where she earned a Certificate in Botanical Illustration with Honors. Her works have been juried into severalAmerican Society of Botanical Artist International Exhibitions and recognized in local art association and society shows. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and has exhibited in both national and international juried exhibitions including the Chautauqua Institute, the Albright Knox Art Gallery, Filoli Gardens, and at the Horticultural Society of New York.
