Course detail: Asset Forfeiture

This class discusses the seizure and forfeiture to law enforcement agencies property such as currency, cars, houses, and businesses that have been used or gained through violations of state and federal law.

The topics of public policy, law enforcement authority and forfeiture investigative techniques are examined. An overview of the Kansas Drug Tax Act is reviewed allowing participants to better understand the differences between the KDTA and forfeiture law. The course will also cover information for administrators on the retention and use of forfeiture funds.

Biography: Colin D. Wood is a contract attorney cross-designated as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Kansas, assigned to the criminal division's asset forfeiture unit in Wichita. He is a retired KBI Senior Special Agent, maintains a part-time private practice assisting local law enforcement agencies in state court asset forfeiture cases, and he writes and teaches on legal topics for the Kansas street officer. Colin holds a degree from Wichita State University and Washburn School of Law.
