Course detail: ASP Instructor Certification Course (AIC)

Course Description:

This advanced certification program is designed to acquaint participants with operational use of the ASP Tactical Baton, Tactical Restraints, and Performance Flashlights and train them to conduct ASP Basic Certification (ABC) Programs.

AIC Training includes all information and techniques provided in the ABC Program, with the addition of ASP Instructional techniques.

Course Objectives:
  • The individual officer has met the competency- based standard of knowledge
  • The individual officer has mastered the performance skills
  • The individual officer has the ability to instruct ABC classes

Instructional Methods:
  • Hands-on training
  • Classroom activities

Who Should Attend:
  • Law Enforcement Officers
  • Qualified Military Personnel
  • Private Security
Participants are required to meet specific health and fitness standards, and attendance does not guarantee certification. The courses are conducted by Certified Trainers and are based on the principles developed by Dr. Kevin Parsons in 1980. The ASP program uses the Confrontational Continuum as its model for the response of law enforcement personnel to the actions of an assailant, and it employs fundamental techniques trained to a level of competency.

The program is court-defensible and has been shown to reduce the number of injuries sustained by officers and assailants, as well as decrease the number of lawsuits filed for excessive force.

This course is offered tuition-free* to qualified officers and agencies.

ASP's free, factory-sponsored courses in the United States require a refundable security deposit, paid at the time of application. This security deposit will only be forfeited if an attendee cancels less than 30 days before the course date, or is a "no-show" for any or all days of the course. Most AICs fill completely, and many have wait lists, so this policy has been put in place to ensure fairness to all who wish to attend.

For lodging and meals at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, please reach out to Jenny Caywood at jcaywood@kletc.org or 620-694-1449 after you have completed your registration in the training.

Fitness Level Necessary for Successful Completion: Active

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend University of Kansas sponsored events. If you require a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in an event, please email KLETC or call 620.694.1400 at least three weeks before the first day of the event. Some events may require notice earlier than three weeks and require you contact a specific individual; if so, that information is provided in the event-specific information.

Notice of Availability of the KLETC Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online at: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

A paper copy of the report will be provided upon request. If you would like to receive a paper copy, you can request that a copy be mailed to you by calling 785-864-6414 or emailing civilrights@ku.edu or arrange for pick-up at a KLETC location.
