Course detail: Micro-Skills for Resilience in Daily Policing

Law enforcement runs on a schedule the human body wasn't built for. Rotating shifts, interrupted sleep, and repeated exposure to other people's worst days accumulate over a career - and the effects show up in judgment, health, and home life long before they show up as a crisis.

This course covers what actually helps, in forms short enough to use on shift. You'll learn to recognize the early signs of stress, fatigue, and burnout in yourself and in the people you work with; practice specific techniques for resetting after a hard call and keeping stress from stacking across a shift; and find out where to get confidential support outside your chain of command - and what happens when you call.

Nothing here requires you to talk about your feelings in front of anyone. Most of the techniques take under two minutes.

Core Competencies

Law enforcement officers will learn to recognize early signs of stress, apply effective strategies to combat such stress, and access valuable wellness resources specific to Kansas and your agency. By the end of the class, you'll be equipped with actionable tools and a clear plan to support your resilience and career-long wellness.

Core Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the four dimensions of officer wellness and describe how a problem in one moves into the others.
  • Distinguish stress, fatigue, and burnout, and recognize the early warning signs of each in yourself and in your coworkers.
  • Apply tactical breathing, grounding, and micro-breaks to reset during or between calls.
  • Describe the daily practices - sleep, hydration, nutrition, movement - that determine whether those techniques work, and identify one to change.
  • Explain what to do when a call stays with you, including when a reaction has stopped being normal and warrants talking to someone.
  • Locate confidential support resources and explain what is and isn't reported to your agency.
