Course detail: Understanding Rape, Culture, Myths & Biases

This module encourages participants to think critically about sexual assault within the broader context of societal norms, myths, and biases. It explores the impact of rape culture on victims, investigations, and the criminal justice system, with a focus on offender accountability, trauma-informed practices, and the experiences of diverse and vulnerable populations.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Define rape culture and explain its influence on society and the justice system.
  •  Identify common myths and biases that affect perceptions and investigative practices.
  •  Apply offender-focused, trauma-informed strategies in sexual assault investigations.

Note: This foundational module is the first in a series of Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigation trainings developed through a 2015 grant awarded to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. While the sessions were recorded several years ago, the content remains highly relevant and aligns with current best practices in trauma-informed approaches to sexual assault cases.
