This module provides law enforcement and allied professionals with practical strategies for conducting trauma-informed interviews that prioritize victim dignity, trust-building, and engagement. Participants will learn how to move away from traditional, ineffective questioning techniques and adopt approaches that support accurate information gathering while minimizing re-traumatization. Emphasis is placed on first response communication, multidisciplinary coordination, and empowering survivors throughout the process.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe key principles of trauma-informed interviewing, including building trust and avoiding victim-blaming language.
  •  Apply effective communication and questioning strategies that support victim engagement and cooperation.
  •  Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in supporting consistent, survivor-centered messaging.

Note: This module is the third in a series of Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigation trainings developed through a 2015 grant awarded to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
