Course detail: Juvenile Law and Intervention

This one-hour course prepares law enforcement officers to effectively respond to incidents involving juveniles by exploring the legal, developmental, and procedural considerations unique to youth. Participants will examine key Kansas statutes, the DCF "Four Questions," and protocols for arrest, transport, and placement. The course also covers juvenile delinquency, runaways, and missing children, with an emphasis on risk reduction, trauma-informed practices, and legal compliance.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the unique challenges presented when policing juveniles, and identify qualities that distinguish juveniles from other members of the community.
  • Apply the Four Questions used by the Kansas Department for Children and Families to assess and respond to potential Child in Need of Care (CINC) cases.
  • Analyze laws and policies specific to juvenile offenders that regulate their arrest, transportation, and placement.
  • Compare and contrast juvenile delinquency and runaways, and their vulnerability to victimization. Officers will assess resources and techniques for investigating missing and abducted children and develop prevention strategies to reduce the risk of criminal behavior and victimization.
