Course detail: Law Enforcement Essentials: Protecting Consumers, Combating Identity Theft, and Navigating Cryptocurrency

Course Overview: This training program is tailored to law enforcement practitioners, including officers, investigators, and supervisors, to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to protect consumers, combat identity theft, and navigate the complex world of cryptocurrency. Developed by the Kansas Attorney General's Office, this course covers critical topics, including consumer protection, identity theft prevention and investigation, and understanding blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. Participants will gain an understanding of relevant statutes, investigative techniques, and enforcement strategies. 

Learning Objectives: By the end of this training, participants will be able to: 

Consumer Protection and Kansas Consumer Protection Act (KCPA): 
  • Recognize deceptive and unfair business practices affecting consumers. 
  • Understand the Kansas Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) and its legal framework. 
  • Identify remedies and enforcement mechanisms available to consumers. 
  • Collaborate effectively with the Kansas Attorney General's Office to protect consumers. 
Identity Theft Prevention and Investigation: 
  •  Define Personal Identifying Information (PII) and its significance in identity theft cases. 
  •  Differentiate between K.S.A. 21-6107 and K.S.A. 50-6, 139 regarding identity theft. 
  •  Gain skills in evidence collection and investigation techniques specific to identity theft.
Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Technology: 
  •  Comprehend the fundamentals of blockchain technology and its applications. 
  •  Understand various cryptocurrencies and how they function as digital assets. 
  •  Learn about the challenges and techniques for evidence collection in cryptocurrency cases. 
  •  Navigate cryptocurrency's legal and regulatory aspects, including civil vs. criminal prosecution. 
  •  Explore case studies, including State v. Bimbo Toyin Akinyemi. 
 Course Format: 
  • The training program consists of interactive lectures, case studies, practical exercises, and Q&A sessions. 
  • Participants will receive resources for further learning and reference. 
  • Networking opportunities with experts from the Kansas Attorney General's Office and local agencies will be available.

Noticeof Availability of the KLETC Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

 TheUniversity of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement TrainingCenter (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City,Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made inconsultation with the Department of Education. The report is available onlineat: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

 The report contains information regarding campus safety andsecurity including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crimereporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and EmergencyNotifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexualassault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures theinstitution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other mattersof importance related to security on campus. The report also containsinformation about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar yearsconcerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus StudentHousing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled bythe institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Propertywithin, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The reportalso contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus StudentHousing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
