Course detail: Understanding Offender Behavior and Investigative Strategies

This module focuses on the behavior and motivations of sexual offenders, emphasizing the importance of offender-focused investigations. Participants will explore how offenders use manipulation, power, and control to commit their crimes, often presenting with different public, private, and secret personas. The training introduces course-of-conduct investigation strategies and highlights the overlap between sexual assault and other interconnected crimes such as domestic violence, strangulation, and stalking.
 
Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, participants will be able to: 
  • Recognize common behavioral patterns and manipulation tactics used by sexual offenders. 
  • Understand the role of entitlement, power, and control in offender behavior. 
  • Apply offender-focused investigative strategies, including course-of-conduct approaches and identifying co-occurring crimes.

Note: This module is the fourth in a series of Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigation trainings developed through a 2015 grant awarded to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. While the sessions were recorded several years ago, the content remains highly relevant and aligns with current best practices in trauma-informed approaches to sexual assault cases.
