Course detail: Extremism in the United States

This one-hour online course provides an examination of the scope, trends, and impacts of domestic extremism in the United States. Drawing on data and analysis from organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), participants will explore the ideological motivations, group affiliations, and real-world consequences of extremist violence. The course will also address the presence of extremist ideology within the law enforcement community and highlight efforts to track and counter these threats.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define domestic extremism and differentiate between ideological and non-ideological extremist-related killings in the U.S.

  2. Identify the most prominent extremist movements responsible for domestic extremist-related violence, including white supremacists, sovereign citizens, and conspiracy extremists.

  3. Summarize recent data trends in extremist-related murders and the role of firearms as the primary weapon of choice.

  4. Recognize the implications of extremist ideologies infiltrating public institutions, particularly law enforcement, and explore strategies for identifying and addressing these threats.
