Course detail: Investigations Unit Leadership Development

Course Description:

One of the most important positions in any law enforcement organization is the front-line supervisor. While there are commonalities between managing patrol units and detective units, there are also many differences, from the way we dress to the types of decisions we are forced to make. These differences are not always readily identifiable to the newly transferred supervisor. This class is for those already in supervisory roles as well as those aspiring to be in a supervisory role to identify and develop strategies for dealing with these unique issues head on. In this class we will discuss:
  • Overview of detective units, including cultural issues such as friction between patrol and detectives
  • Legal issues specific to investigators
  • Administrative issues such as personnel selection; equipment and training; policy and discipline; case assignments; and team spirit vs. elitism
  • Operational issues from the perspective of leading and supervising, to include: officer safety; high risk activities; high profile investigations; officer involved shootings; and internal criminal or administrative investigations for your agency and outside entities
Core Competencies:
  • Participants will employ best practices as they investigate any crime from its beginning to its eventual disposition; either as an individual, or as part of an investigatory team.
  • Participants will appraise and adopt the duties and behaviors incumbent upon a law enforcement leader who acts in ways that support the needs of their organization, community and profession.
Course Objectives:

Law enforcement training should be practical, relatable, and results oriented. Upon the completion of this training, attendees will be able to:
  • Recognize practical and cultural differences between patrol and detective work groups.
  • Gain awareness of legal issues that affect detectives.
  • Identify administrative matters and issues specific to investigations units, along with appropriate planning measures and responses.
  • Identify operational scenarios and situations, specific to investigations units, along with appropriate planning measures and responses.
  • Adapt and scale the information learned to their specific organization.
Instructional Methods:
  • Lecture
  • Media
  • Discussion
  • Hands-On exercises
Who Should Attend:
  • Law Enforcement Officers
  • This class is geared towards those individuals tasked with the supervision and leadership of detective units, with particular focus on those who may have no or minimal prior experience in the investigative function, or those who may have this position in the future. Additionally, this is a good refresher course for those already in the role.
