Course detail: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design
Course Description:
Our schools are, in many cases, safe places for our students to learn and thrive. Yet in some cases, the very design of a building, like schools, lend themselves to unwittingly providing opportunities for crimes to occur. Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a thought process given to the construction or remodeling of an area to encourage positive activity and protecting these areas by discouraging crime from occurring.
In this course, we will examine the premise of CPTED and its application to our schools. Why it is important and how it can be best applied will also be reviewed. A classroom portion will be followed by a site visit to a local school for a walk-through and practical discussion of best practices and realistic expectations.

- Participants will be able to decide upon prescribed courses of action or techniques that will provide a greater level of safety in a school environment, event, or situation.
Course Objectives:
- Identify the core principles of CPTED
- Identify 3 traditionally weak areas in school design that apply to your school
- Identify 3 improvements in design or policy that apply to your school
