Course detail: Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

Crimes that result in blood loss can provide valuable information to the investigator regarding positioning and movement of individuals, and actions that took place during the commission of the crime. In this course, students will learn how to correctly and adequately document the crime scene, individuals, and evidence for submission for bloodstain pattern analysis.

Course Competency
Participants will employ best practices as they investigate any crime from its beginning to its eventual disposition; either as an individual, or part of an investigatory team.

Course Objectives
  • Discuss bloodstain pattern terminology
  • Learn classification skills so students can make sense of bloodstains and bloodstain patterns encountered at crime scenes.
  • Learn techniques for proper documentation which will allow for subsequent remote analysis by a qualified bloodstain pattern analyst.
  • Understand use of Photography (Distance, Mid-range, Close-up)
  • Use of scales and unique identifiers.
  • How to implement sketches
  • Acquire familiarity with supplies and equipment utilized for the documentation of bloodstains at a crime scene.
  • Apply learned techniques through practical exercises of varying complexity, to include a mock crime scene.
  • Demonstrate how to write a bloodstain pattern documentation report.
