This self-paced online course is Part 1 of a blended learning program addressing NFPA 1550, Chapter 5, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness Programs, for Incident Safety Officer. The course provides the foundational cognitive and didactic content required before attending Part 2, the two-day face-to-face seminar. Students complete coursework asynchronously, with instructor grading and feedback provided throughout. This course does not directly result in certification, but is a required prerequisite for Part 2, through which IFSAC and Pro Board National Certification is available. The course enrollment period runs July 1 through June 30. Students who enroll later in the fiscal year will have less time to complete the coursework before the course closes. All students must register separately for Part 2.

Recommended texts: A textbook is not required but is strongly recommended. Recommended text: Reeder, Fire Department Incident Safety Officer, 4th Edition.

Course prerequisites: NFPA 1021/1020 Fire Officer 1 National Certification (IFSAC and/or Proboard) is a recommended prerequisite. National Certification for Incident Safety Officer will not be awarded until a candidate is a Nationally Certified Fire Officer 1.
