Technical Rescue Training

Courses offered within the Technical Rescue program are typically those courses that fall within the scope of the NFPA 1006 Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications. Specific disciplines included in this program are Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Trench Rescue, Structural Collapse, Vehicle and Machinery Rescue, and Surface Water Rescue. Disciplines included in the standard, but not offered by the Institute at this time, are Swiftwater Rescue, Dive Rescue and Surf Rescue. Ice Rescue training is available on a limited basis. Although not included in the standard, Grain Engulfment/Entrapment Rescue training is also available within this program. Other topics related to technical rescue fall within this program area.

Courses & Events

Confined Space Rescue Level 1 and 2 is a three-day course designed to help employers meet OSHA standard 1910.146 Subpart (k) Rescue & Emergency Services, and NFPA Standard 1006 on confined space rescue.
Fundamentals of Rope Rescue is a five-day non-certification program which teaches the basics of technical rope rescue including introduction to technical rescue rope skills, types and uses of ropes and knots, equipment, ascending and descending techniques, and anchor systems. Class will include classroom and hands-on application of skills on a planned building or tower.
This one-day course provides the knowledge and skills required to perform a Grain Engulfment Rescue.
Introduction to Technical Rescue (ITR) Part 1 online is designed to meet the knowledge based elements of NFPA 1006, Chapter 5.
Introduction to Technical Rescue (ITR) Part 2 is designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 1006, Chapter 5.
This five-day course will introduce rescue personnel to the basic needs to perform at technical rescue incidents.
Kansas Flood and Water Rescue is for rescuers who may be involved in a flood or surface water rescue.
Rope Rescue 1 is a five-day course designed to meet the NFPA Standard 1006 on Rope Rescue Technician Level 1.
Rope Rescue 2 is a five-day certification course that builds onto the skills learned in Rope Rescue 1. It is designed to meet the NFPA Standard 1006 on Rope Rescue Technician Level 2.
Structural Collapse Technician Level 1 and 2 is an intense 80-hour certification course designed to prepare emergency response personnel to initiate rescue operations in structural collapse emergencies.
Trench Rescue Operations is a three-day non-certification course designed for technical rescue teams who respond to trench and/or excavation accidents.
Vehicle Rescue is a twelve hour course designed for fire fighters and other emergency responders to teach them the proper procedures for extricating accident victims from vehicles.
