Course detail: Live Fire Instructor and Instructor-in-Charge - Online Course Part 1

This six-week, facilitated online course is Part 1 of a blended learning program addressing NFPA 1020, Chapters 7 and 8, Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, Fire Officer, and Emergency Medical Services Officer Professional Qualifications, for Live Fire Instructor and Instructor-in-Charge. Students complete coursework asynchronously within the structured six-week window, with instructor feedback and grading provided throughout. Course start and end dates are established based on host agency training requests. Part 2 is a 2-day face-to-face seminar. All students must register separately for Part 2 and certification testing. This program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to plan, deliver, and supervise live fire training evolutions safely and effectively, in compliance with NFPA 1400. A textbook is not required for the online portion but is strongly recommended. Recommended texts: Jones & Bartlett Learning, Live Fire Training, 2nd Edition, and Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 5th Edition. Textbooks will be available for use during the Part 2 face-to-face seminar and must be returned at the conclusion of class.

Course prerequisites (REQUIRED): Firefighter I and II certification; ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800; and Fire Instructor I certification. Instructor-in-Charge candidates must additionally hold Fire Instructor II certification. National certification is available for this level - IFSAC and Pro Board.

Enrollments are monitored daily and unauthorized (non-Kansas firefighters) will be removed from the course and their registration fee refunded.
