Course: Native Plants: How Growing Them Benefits Us and Wildlife (OSH-BCKHAB)
Wish you had more birds, bees, and butterflies where you live? This class will discuss how to improve the habitat around you using native plants, whether you have a traditional yard, container garden, or community space. Virginia native plants are perfectly adapted to our soils and climate. They are generally unaffected by late frosts, summer droughts, or other seasonal challenges. A list of easy-to-grow plants and their benefits will be provided and discussed.
This presentation will answer the following questions: What is a native plant? Why are native plants important? Why should we care about invasive species? Does my yard really matter? What if I don't have a yard? Includes alternatives for commonly grown invasives. Some examples of garden redesign and incorporating natives in existing plantings will be shown. Individual native plants and how to grow them will be included.
