Come and tap your feet to a program of pieces composed by Scott Joplin, the uncontested King of Ragtime, plus a sampling of those by his most distinguished disciples, James Scott and Joseph Lamb. Biography: Alan grew up in Brooklyn, New York where he began piano lessons at the age of eight. He holds a B.A. in Music from Brooklyn College and both an M.A. and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in Music Theory and Composition where he studied with composers George Crumb, George Rochberg, Richard Wernick and musicologist Lawrence Bernstein.He was an instructor of music theory and composition at Yale University from 1975 to 1977. From 1978 through 2014 he pursued a career in software engineering. In 2015 he relocated to Richmond where, in retirement, he has been working as a freelance classical pianist, and Osher instructor since 2017. In addition to his several piano classes, he has also offered courses on the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Babylonian Talmud. On the internet, he is best known for having published, between 1989 and 2000, a blog featuring a detailed analysis of every song released by the Beatles.
