Course: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using ArcGIS Pro (NC-GIS_INTRO)

This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamental concepts and techniques of GIS using ArcGIS Pro software. GIS is a powerful tool for analyzing and visualizing spatial data, which is becoming increasingly important in many fields, including environmental science, urban planning, and public health. In this course, you will learn how to use ArcGIS Pro to manage, analyze, and display geographic data. 

Course Outcomes
  • Understand the fundamental concepts of GIS and spatial data.
  • Create and edit data in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Perform basic spatial analysis, including buffering and querying.
  • Visualize data using a variety of techniques, including maps and charts.

  • Introduction to GIS and spatial data.
  • Getting started with ArcGIS Pro, including navigating the user interface.
  • Data creation and editing, including digitizing and georeferencing. 
  • Basic spatial analysis, including buffering and querying.
  • Data visualization, including mapping and charting.
  • Advanced analysis techniques, including spatial statistics.
  • Data management and quality assurance.
Teaching Methodology

The course will be taught online through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises using ArcGIS Pro. Students will work on individual guided projects to apply what they have learned in the course to real-world problems. The course will also include group discussions and peer review to encourage collaboration and critical thinking.

Prerequisites

No prior experience with GIS or ArcGIS Pro is required. However, basic computer skills, such as file management and working with spreadsheets, are recommended.
