Course: The Art of War: The Vietnam War Part 2 (OSH-ARTWRNAM1)

Last spring, we introduced the art of the Vietnam war, focusing on portraits and landscapes. In this session, we continue to view the Vietnam soldier art, exploring more themes reflected in their works. Join us as we analyze and discuss how wartime artists serving on the frontlines applied their artistic talents to express what they experienced in real-time from their own unique perspectives. This presentation is a collaboration between Ralph Kidder and Alice Waagen, American Art docents, and Steve Anders, retired Army historian, who will provide the historical context for the art.

Alice Waagen

Biography: Alice Waagen has a PhD in art education from the Pennsylvania State University. Alice volunteers at the Smithsonian American Art Museum as a videoconference instructor for the Artful Connections Program, presenting programs on art history and visual literacy using SAAM's extensive collection of American art.

Ralph Kidder

Biography: Dr. Ralph D. Kidder served as vice president for Financial Affairs and Treasurer at Marymount University until his retirement in 2014. He was responsible for managing the university's $75 million annual budget and supervised the business and accounting functions, human resources management, physical plant, transportation and auxiliary services departments. Since his retirement, Dr. Kidder has served as a University Supervisor in the Teacher Education program at Marymount. He is a member of the Leadership Arlington Class of 2008 and served on the Board of Directors of The Reading Connection in Arlington, Virginia and IncSpire, a business incubator in Reston, Virginia.Dr. Kidder holds an Ed. D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Massachusetts Boston; an M.B.A. in Public Management from Boston University; an M.A. in Teaching (History and Education) from Duquesne University; and a B.A. in History from Lehigh University. Active in professional organizations, Dr. Kidder has served as Treasurer of the History of Education Society and as Budget Chairman of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Kidder currently volunteers as a videoconference docent for the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Artful Connections program in Washington DC. He has worked with elementary and secondary school students across the United States, with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute based at universities and colleges throughout the country and with a variety of adult and senior citizen programs.

Biography: Dr. Steven E. Anders graduated with a Ph.D. in History from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1982. During his 30-year career as Command Historian at Fort Lee, Va., he published numerous articles and received the Army's highest civilian award for teaching excellence.
