Course Detail: OSH-TENNBKT - Courage, Race, and Basketball: Breaking the Color Line in a Tennessee College Town

This course will focus on the story of East Tennessee State University basketball player Tommy Woods, who overcame racial hostility and social isolation while breaking the intercollegiate sports color barrier in his state in 1963 -- a full three years before the first Black athlete competed in the Southeastern Conference. The course will also include an overview of the history of desegregation of Southern sports in the 1960s, along with the instructor's personal reflections on his experiences as a high school and college athlete in Tennessee as his schools and teams addressed, with varying degrees of success, the challenges of integrating their sports programs.
