Course: Virginia Government and Politics (NC-VAGOV)

Virginia Government and Politics covers the unique political history and some of the historic figures that helped shape the modern Commonwealth. The class will be conducted through a combination of weekly video lectures that can be viewed at your leisure, and a weekly virtual meeting to discuss course content in more detail. During this 11-week course students will learn about Virginia's unique political history, with lectures focusing on:
  • The Colonial Period
  • The Revolutionary Period
  • The Disruptive Period (Civil War and Reconstruction)
  • The Era of Jim Crow and Massive Resistance
  • The Modern Period
Students will also learn about the structure and operation of Virginia's state government, with sessions covering:
  • The Executive Branch
  • The Legislative Branch
  • The Judicial Branch
  • The State Bureaucracy
  • The Budget Process and State Finances
  • Local Government in Virginia
