Course Detail: CMP501 - ExcelŽ: Using Lookup Functions and Formula Auditing

Master Advanced ExcelŽ Formulas and Confidently Audit Your Data ExcelŽ 


Using Lookup Functions and Formula Auditing is designed for users who want to take their Excel skills to the next level by working with more advanced formulas and ensuring accuracy across their workbooks. This course focuses on building strong, reliable calculations while giving you the tools to confidently review and troubleshoot your data.

You'll learn how to use powerful lookup and reference functions to find, match, and organize data efficiently, even in large or complex worksheets. The course also emphasizes formula auditing techniques, helping you trace how calculations work, identify errors, and resolve issues that could impact your results. These skills are especially valuable for anyone who relies on Excel for reporting, analysis, or decision-making.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to create advanced formulas, understand how data flows through your workbook, and quickly pinpoint and correct problems to maintain accurate, dependable spreadsheets.


Course Content Includes:

  • Using advanced functions such as VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, MATCH, INDEX, and TRANSPOSE
  • Tracing precedent and dependent cells using auditing tools and trace arrows
  • Watching and evaluating formulas to identify and resolve errors

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of ExcelŽ.

This class has two options to participate:

1. Fully in-person at Purdue Fort Wayne. Students will participate in the live sessions during the scheduled course days and times.

2. Fully online via Zoom. Students will participate in the live sessions during scheduled course days and times. (Online Course Requirements: Students should have access to MS Excel 2019 or newer, a reliable internet connection, and a computer camera and microphone).

You will be able to select the option that works for you (ONLINE or IN-PERSON) at time of registration.


About the Instructor

Todd Raines is the IT Training Coordinator at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Raines is the 2008 recipient of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) Mid-America Region Excellence in Teaching and Faculty Service Award.
