Course Detail: PER715 - Building Resources with Self-Compassion - NEW!

Learn to Cultivate Self-Compassion

We all are compassionate people, yet we tend to exclude ourselves from our own circle of care - often being much harsher with ourselves than we are with anyone else. And that has consequences as far as our own happiness and how we affect those around us. Self-compassion is a way to overcome that by relearning how to be kind to ourselves. Research shows that cultivating self-compassion can help with stress, depression and anxiety, and it can enhance well-being and resilience. And it isn't hard to do.

In this course, we'll explore what self-compassion is, and how it does or does not show up in your life. We'll learn ways to cultivate it to support ourselves when difficulties arise. We'll also see how self-compassion can help with specific issues, such as difficult emotions, the inner critic, and fostering assertiveness. Instructional handouts are included in this course, along with time for both large and small group discussions so we can learn from each other.

Jonathan Walker, MD
Assistant Clinical Professor
Indiana University School of Medicine, Fort Wayne

Jon is a retired physician who graduated from medical school in 1983 and practiced retinal surgery - a subspecialty of ophthalmology. He has trained or been on the faculty at several institutions including University of Southern California, University of Iowa, Ohio State University, and Indiana University. He came to the practices of mindfulness and self-compassion about 9 years ago as a way to deal with stress and burnout, and found them to be profoundly helpful. So he redirected his career to be able to teach them, and he has done training through University of California at Los Angeles, Berkeley and San Diego as well as other programs. His main qualification, however, is that he spent most of his life living the consequences of being neither very mindful nor self-compassionate, so he is motivated to offer ways for you to avoid such a fate.
