AWP Writing Workshop and Book Study:

Writing for Renewal: Rediscovering the Joy of Teaching

PFW's Appleseed Writing Project is pleased to offer area K-16 teachers this professional development opportunity.

Register now for this two-day workshop designed to give (K-16) teachers time to write, share ideas, and explore teaching strategies addressing the literacy needs of our students. Participants will leave the workshop with theoretical foundations to incorporate joy in their classrooms, along with practical applications for instruction, and tangible action plans to implement those ideas.

Day 1: July 18

Day 1 will introduce or reconnect teachers to the Appleseed Writing Project and the opportunity to examine specific issues in their classrooms. The writer's workshop format will allow time to share ideas and best practices, reflect on teaching and writing, and discover applications of the workshop content to one's own classroom. A relevant and timely reading will be discussed, followed by a teaching demonstration where participants experience one teacher's engaging lesson that brings joy to her students.

Day 2: July 19

Day 2 will address the book more closely, involving a deeper dive into what brings us joy as teachers, how to enhance the joy of learning in our students, and what gets in the way of achieving that joy. In small groups, participants will consider how to apply these concepts to their own classrooms. Focus groups will be formed around a few topics of interest, including but not limited to reading and writing across the curriculum, teaching writing to English language learners, and using digital tools in the English/Language Arts classroom.

Please Note:

  • The workshop will include a book study of Gholdy Muhammad's Unearthing Joy. The price of the book that will be used for the book study portion of the workshop is included in your registration fee. Your book will be distributed to you prior to the workshop by the Appleseed Writing Project.
  • 12 PGPs are available for participation along with a certificate of completion.
  • Light refreshments will be provided. (Participants should bring their own lunch.)
