Course detail: 2026 KBI Laboratory Capabilities: Chemical Analysis Series - Seized Drugs, Toxicology, and Trace

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has developed a comprehensive Lab Services Training and Outreach Program. This portion of the series focuses on the Laboratory section performing different types of chemical analysis: Seized Drugs, Toxicology, and Trace.  These forensic science disciplines can provide crucial analysis of evidence from confiscated drugs to DUI blood testing to primer gunshot residue identification.


Course Competency: Participants will employ best practices in evidence collection and packaging, as well as the interpretation of reports from chemical analysis-based sections of the KBI Laboratory.


Course Objectives:

Toxicology

  • Understand submission requirements for impaired driving cases
  • Learn pre-submission parameters affecting analysis
  • Learn current trends in impaired driving cases
  • Understand the KBI's post-mortem testing capabilities and collaboration with public health on drug overdose cases

 Chemistry

  • Understand general submission and packaging requirements for seized drugs and clandestine laboratory cases 
  • Learn emerging threats in drug chemistry
  • Understand the basics of Delta-8 THC, hemp, and marijuana
  • Learn about resources for the seized drugs field testing

 Trace

  • Learn about current (and future) types of Trace examinations offered by the KBI
  • Understand the types and significance of Trace exam conclusions
  • Understand the misperceptions and limitations of Trace testing
  • When can the KBI Trace Section help with your specific investigation
  • Review actual case scenario examples
  • Acquire familiarity with supplies and equipment utilized for the collection of trace evidence (PGSR, fire debris, etc.).
