Course: Researching at the Library of Virginia (OSH-RSRCHLVA)

The Library of Virginia (LVA) is a key resource for Virginia genealogy research and for many surrounding states. The LVA has the most comprehensive collection of Virginia genealogy materials ranging from the earliest colonial times to the present. A few highlights: over 121 million state, local, and federal government records; over 54,000 maps; and more than 2,500 newspapers and journals.

This is a 2-session class. The first class is on-campus and will give you a foundational understanding of the LVA's services, their collections (online and on-site) and how to focus your research. The second class is at the Library of Virginia and will include a tour, and time for hands-on research with assistance available from the instructor and research staff at the library.

Ashley Ramey

Biography: Ashley Ramey is the Community Outreach Specialist at the Library of Virginia, where she is responsible for identifying and engaging organizations and individuals within the diverse communities throughout the commonwealth, develops and maintains community partnerships, identifies opportunities for the Library participation in local community events, and creates innovative programming. She also assists researchers and staff, gives presentations and conducts tours, contributes to the Library's social media sites and blogs, and coordinates the genealogy programs offered at the Library of Virginia. Ashley holds a BA in History and MA in Public History from Virginia Commonwealth University.
