Course: Architecture of Gilded Age Mansions (OSH-GILDED)

Study the architectural design of the great houses on 5th Ave in NYC and their summer 'cottages' in Newport, Rhode Island, which were built during the Gilded Age from 1875-1910. Beginning with Mrs. Astor's townhouse for 'The 400' and the grand mansions of the Vanderbilts, and also the mansions they built in Newport to entertain their friends.

Learn about the architects they hired, what the design of the great edifices and opulent interiors were trying to achieve, and what architectural precedents they were based on. We will study original drawings and floor plans and photos to analyze the architects and major elements of interior design, and perhaps debunk some of the myths of the buildings in Julian Fellowes's The Gilded Age, an HBO series.
