How do we know what we know? Much of what we know about the Holocaust comes from diaries, photographs and art. Prisoners were sometimes given cameras to record faces of people entering concentration camps for Nazi records, some hidden in metal cans and boxes. Diaries were written in secret before and during incarceration and hidden in a variety of carefully planned locations. The photographers and writers hid their work hoping it would be found in the future. When released artists turned to paint to depict what they had seen.
