Course: Music as Medicine: Ancient Wisdom Meets 21st-Century Science (OSH-MUSMED)

How did ancient Greek, Chinese, and aboriginal healers employ music to treat illness and heal the body? Were their practices effective, or did they presage the claims of latter-day snake oil? Did they know something about music that we don't? As we will see, the ancients intuitively understood what 21st-century scientists are now proving in laboratories: music isn't just art or entertainment; it is a potent therapeutic force that, among other things, can modulate blood pressure, alleviate anxiety, reduce pain more successfully than analgesics, help stroke patients regain lost speech and the ability to walk, and even temporarily draw patients out of dementia to experience again the joy of life. We are living at the dawn of humankind's science-driven realization of the power of music. Music therapists are now de rigueur components of hospital staffs across the country (an outgrowth of treating soldiers of the Great War who suffered from what we presently call PTSD). Modern brain imaging reveals that music 'lights up' neural pathways throughout the entire brain, activating multiple regions simultaneously. As the late Dr. Oliver Sacks observed, 'Nothing activates the brain so extensively as music.' Join us for a sweeping exploration of the role of music in medicine and current uses of music as medicine. Learn why your favorite songs can influence your health and wellbeing more than you might imagine. And learn practical ways to harness music's healing potential in your daily life.
