Course: VCU Libraries Noteworthy Book Art Collection & Archives Tour (OSH-VCULIBRY)

Visit the largest collection of book art in the Southeast at VCU Libraries. Our visit begins in the reading room of Special Collections and Archives where we will see and handle some examples of book art. That is followed by a tour of the secured storage stacks to get a glimpse into the many and varied holdings in SC&A. We will finish the event with refreshments in the Cabell Room - a nod to the library's namesake, James Branch Cabell, noted Richmond author and a grandfather of the fantasy fiction genre.

If you are not familiar with book art, the most straightforward definition is that book art is a work of art that takes its inspiration from the form of a book, whether that be a codex, scroll, palm leaf manuscript, etc., and runs with it. Truly, it is one of the most surprising art forms as you truly do not know what a work may hold until you interact and engage with it.
