Course: The Five Ingredients of Pop Songs and the Musical Chess (OSH-FIVEING)

In Session 1, the 5 ingredients will be identified and illustrated through numerous musical examples. Just like in cooking, these 5 ingredients can be mixed in many combinations and quantities. The class will create a side-by-side comparison chart to observe the diversity of structures. Students will learn how to identify these ingredients as they listen to examples on their own. Session 2 will focus on the songs within the 1984 musical Chess. Benny and Bjorn, of ABBA fame, along with Tim Rice, created a set of well-crafted songs that deserve closer scrutiny. While 'One Night in Bangkok' achieved #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and in Canada as well, 'A Model of Decorum' is worthy of a Mozartean 'singspeil.' The class will also look at the changes between the original London production and the heavily revised, as it continues to be, Broadway production in 1988.
