This is a guided walk of the Expanding Freedom exhibit, followed by a 30-minute seated discussion and Q&A in the Institute's Lab where participants will reflect together on the exhibit's central themes and consider how this history informs our civic life. The exhibit explores how racial slavery shaped Virginia, Richmond, and the nation. Participants will encounter stories of the ideological origins of human difference, the contradictions of the American Revolution, Richmond's central role in the domestic slave trade, and the long struggle to expand human freedom. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about exhibit design choices such as large-scale illustrations, data visualizations, and interactive tools. Visitors will leave with a clearer understanding of Richmond's place in this national story and a stronger framework for connecting the past to the civic choices we face now.
