Course: Twentieth Century Song Hunters and Collectors (OSH-WMSNG)
Song hunters and collectors in the early 20th century contributed songs to the rich cultural heritage of American music, including folk, gospel, country, and blues. We will explore the songs found by A. P. Carter and Alan Lomax which directly led to the folk revival of the mid-20th century. Song collectors ensured that songs were preserved and reached new generations. We will feature Harry Smith, a collector of American folk music from the 20s-40s. Recording artists will include the Carter Family, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Odetta, and many more. Session 1: Song Hunters A.P.
